How Jude became the East Midlands Mentor of the Year

3 April 2023

Following on from being crowned Mentor of the Year at the East Midlands Leadership Awards, NG director talked about the importance of mentors in her career – and how she hopes to influence the next generation of female commercial property talent.

When did you first become aware of the importance of mentors?
I’ve been lucky enough to have mentors during the course of my career, but looking back, there have definitely been people there in my life right from an early age who have mentored me. Sometimes we don’t realise it until looking back at how pivotal those people are in shaping us – often at the most critical points in our life.

Who was the person who you can single out who helped you in your early career?
When I was working, and studying to become a Chartered Surveyor, my mentor Vicky Barton was crucial in ensuring I kept on the right track. Ultimately, it’s down to you to perform and want to succeed, but having that experienced person in the work environment to keep you motivated is really important.

How easy is the step from mentee to mentor?
I think I am still a mentee and a mentor – we are always learning and developing and each need to also have our own mentors, to ensure we are pushing ourselves and stepping outside of our comfort zone.

Can you explain your role as mentor at NG?
I feel it is a role which has naturally developed. I’ve helped particularly the younger members of the team develop in their professional roles, but also being there in a personal capacity. Our lives are busy and stressful, and it is as important to ensure that you are there for support and guidance, which then feeds into how they perform and develop individually.

What’s the secret to being a successful mentor?
Being approachable, empathetic and overall, enjoy giving something back to your mentee.
