Looking ahead to 2026: What the next year might really feel like for small businesses
As make our way into 2026, forecasts point to modest UK economic growth over the next 12 months. The outlook suggests steady but subdued expansion rather than a sharp rebound. Encouragingly, many UK business leaders, close to 90 percent in some surveys, are still planning for growth and investment, even while navigating ongoing cost pressures.
Those pressures remain real. Regulatory change continues to demand attention, with business rates reform, wage cost increases and evolving employment legislation all affecting forward planning. Energy costs are more stable than in recent years, but they remain high by historical standards.
So what is 2026 likely to feel like?
The coming year is shaping up to be one of cautious stability rather than strong growth. It should feel less volatile than 2023 and 2024, but still tight and demanding. Success will rely less on riding economic momentum and more on careful planning, agility and informed decision making. Businesses that invest wisely and adapt to changing client needs will be best placed to perform well.
This environment particularly favours micro businesses that offer clear value, specialist expertise and a level of personal service that larger firms often struggle to match. For most small businesses, growth is unlikely to come from the wider economy alone. Instead, it will be driven by better marketing, clearer positioning and more efficient systems.
Digital transformation will continue to be a differentiator, not through hype but through practical application. Simple, cost effective tools that automate administration, improve bookkeeping and support forecasting can save significant time and improve resilience. For many micro businesses, these efficiencies matter more than headline growth.
Hiring is also likely to remain cautious. Contractors, freelancers and part-time support will continue to be more cost effective than full time recruitment for many firms, while retaining good people and trusted relationships will remain critical.
Where micro businesses can do well in 2026 is by being niche or specialist, locally trusted, service led rather than cost led, digitally visible even if small, and flexible in how they operate. For businesses like ours, the year ahead may feel calmer than recent years and potentially more rewarding, as the focus shifts to efficiency, selectivity, clarity and professionalism.
At NG Chartered Surveyors, we are looking ahead to 2026 with confidence and purpose. A key part of our plans is the expansion of our Building Surveying offering to all clients, reflecting growing demand for clear, practical advice across the full property lifecycle.
